Whiteman Park is one the world’s largest metropolitan recreation and conservation parks. Covering nearly 4,000 hectares, this extraordinary showcase of nature and history attracts visitors from continents away.

And yet, for you as a Kinmore Green resident, it is just a 13 minute drive from the doorstep of your new home.

This is a place of fun and wonder where everyone is welcome to relax over a picnic, cycle through bushland, interact with native wildlife, and take a ride on a steam train. You will find something different to do and see every single time you visit

To have a good look around, hop on a historic Whiteman Explorer bus, or vintage train or tram and be transported back in time while being transported through the parklands to scope out where you next want to explore. Or hire a go-kart and pedal your way around the extensive grounds at your own pace.

How things used to be

Perhaps stop off at any of the three museums which can be found at Whiteman Park. The Motor Museum of WA has over 200 intermittently changing vehicles housed in a purpose-created facility. Marvel at the changes made over the years, starting from horse drawn buggies through to today’s sleek and powerful racing cars (including the 2014 Red Bull RB10 that Daniel Ricciardo won his first ever F1 Grand Prix race in!).

Revolutions Transport Museum holds vehicles too, even an EJ Holden you can sit in, but as the home of the “Whiteman Collection” (bequeathed to the WA State Government by Lew Whiteman who owned, farmed and developed land in the area) it also has a fascinating collection of memorabilia, historical objects, and some interactive exhibits, each adding to the story of how the locals used to live.

If you’re looking for more insights into Kinmore Green’s farming history, The Tractor Museum of WA has 40 tractors on display alongside relics from WA’s agricultural past. Amongst the tractors is an operational 1920 Fordson and WA’s Chamberlain Industries’ original prototype.

Nature in all its beauty

While all the amazing vehicles on display are old, imagine how old the towering eucalyptus trees are! Follow the cycle paths or walking trails through bushland as old as time and look out for stunning Australian flowers, and a kookaburra having a laugh.

If you want to get up close and personal with some wildlife, visit Caversham Wildlife Park in Whiteman Park which is the largest privately owned collection of native wildlife in WA. With over 200 species you will find koalas, kangaroos, penguins, reptiles, wombats, quokkas and other incredible creatures in their protected natural habitats. There is even an interactive farmyard at Molly’s Farm with a hatchery and nursery too!

It’s playtime

If your little ones have energy to burn there are lots of playgrounds and adventures to be had at Whiteman Park! The Village West and East Playgrounds both have fun play equipment and surrounding parklands and picnic shelters for you to relax in. Next to Village East is the Mini Pool Playground with a large wading pool and waterspouts. Or make new friends at the Park’s biggest playground, Pia’s Place Nature Play Space, which has a flying fox, lighthouse, cubby, sandpit and inclusive learning spaces.

Your mini David Attenborough might like The Children’s Forest which is where kids can connect with nature by spotting plants and animals of the forest and find hidden artworks and secret fairy doors.

Want to get into sports? Get a team together to use the cricket pitch, basketball and tennis courts or to do the Orienteering Courses.

Everyone is welcome at Whiteman Park, including man’s best friend!

The 2.5 hectare Dog Park, in the Mussel Pool East area, is completely fenced and has an obstacle course designed in colours that dogs can see.

Time to chill

After all that, you might feel like a break. There are parks, picnic shelters and barbecue facilities for all to share if you feel like bringing your own food. Or the Village Cafe offers dine-in or takeaway meals, and the Kiosk at the large Mussel Pool picnic grounds offer tasty treats to buy. Talking about treats, a visit to the Village Lolly Shop is a must! This shop is located in the Village Mall where you can also purchase handmade local goods from the Handcraft Centre, or meet an artist and purchase original artwork at the Village Art Gallery.

For something completely different, here too you can visit Perth’s only working letterpress museum, Bright Press, where you can watch

the traditional craft and presses in action, and go home with some special stationery and souvenirs.

If you just want space to breathe, walk past the “four pillars of happiness” – Storytelling, Purpose, Belonging and Transcendence – to reach the unique serenity of the Healing Place.

There is so much to experience at Whiteman Park, and fortunately as a Kinmore Green resident you live so close-by that you can visit every day!
